In Keeping with our mandate BPW Canada commends the collaboration between the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) and the United Nations Global Compact for their efforts to bring the business case for gender equity to the forefront.

The Canadian Coalition for Women's Empowerment Supports

1. The UN Women and UN Global Compact Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) and,

2. Encourages the awareness, promotion and integration of the Women's Empowerment Principles into all aspects of Canadian life; including small   business, all levels of government and civil society.

What are the WEPs?  

The Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) are a set of Principles for businesses that offer guidance on how to empower women in the workplace, marketplace and community.

WEPs Vision

Transform corporate behavior and intentionally position gender and women's  empowerment as essential core business objectives.


WEPs Objective

Motivate and guide business to take wide ranging actions to empower women in the workplace, marketplace and community and to view such action as an integral and necessary part of corporate sustainability.


BPW Canada has made Women's Empowerment  a top organizational priority and we invite all stakeholders in Canada to demonstrate their support for the WEPs and encourage business leaders to implement them to demonstrate their commitment to gender equality in Canada.

How All Stakeholders can use the Seven Women's Empowerment Principles?

While designed as a tool for the private sector to strengthen company policies and programs to create a culture that can achieve gender equality, the Principles provide a platform for all stakeholders to advance their commitment to gender equality. Together we can create a Canada where women’s economic capacity is unleashed and where women are fully engaged in positions of leadership and strategic decision-making. As well as being a useful guide for business, the Principles seek to inform other stakeholders, including governments, and civil society in their engagement with business.

The Seven Principles: 

1. Establish high-level corporate leadership for gender equality  

2. Treat all women and men fairly at work – respect and support human rights and         non-discrimination

3. Ensure the health, safety and well-being of all women and men workers

4. Promote education, training and professional development for women

5. Implement enterprise development, supply chain and marketing practices that           empower women

6. Promote equality through community initiatives and advocacy

 7. Measure and publicly report on progress to achieve gender equality 

 Women's Empowerment Strategic Dialogue

BPW Canada engaged government leaders responsible for women’s issues in discussions to elicit strategic support to promote the WEPs in Canada. 

Thought provoking discussions with the Ministry Responsible for Women’s Issues, the Coordinator for the Status of Women Canada, Critics on Women’s Issues, and other Members of Parliament federally and provincially combined with correspondence and consultations with municipal governments, business organizations and private and public companies across Canada indicated that support for gender equality and the WEPs was gaining traction.

Recognizing the potential for even greater momentum we engaged in further discussions with the UN Global Compact WEPs Leadership Team at their UN Headquarters in New York which resulted in the Canadian Coalition for Women's Empowerment as a conceptual framework to advance women’s equality to the next level in Canada.  


We are pleased to assist corporations with 10 or more employees to take the important first step in signing the UN Global Compact and UN Women Women's Empowerment Principles CEO Statement of Support. 


In addition, however, BPW Canada encourages ALL other stakeholders to demonstrate their support for women's empowerment by signing the Canadian Coalition for Women's Empowerment Statement of Support.
